Page loading …ResourcesFonts ⮞ Possible Weights

Synopsis : this page displays samples of all the possible weights of all the fonts listed in Resources ⮞ Fonts ⮞ Metrics. You can examine the samples to determine which distinct weights exist: this is useful in trying to decide which fonts and font weights to use in websites.

Note : there is a much, much slower alternate page which, for most fonts, determines automatically and precisely which distinct, true weights exist. This page takes so long to load that your browser may say that it isn’t responding, or may ask you whether you want to abort the JavaScript: you should have patience and let the alternate page’s Javascript finish.

Note : the correct fonts will not appear when the operating system performs font substitution; for example, Helvetica and Times will not appear in Windows because Windows substitutes Arial for Helvetica and Times New Roman for Times.

Note : this page may appear very slowly, because much JavaScript must be executed, and many embedded fonts must be downloaded; Chrome-based browsers were particularily slow when this was written, in July 2017.

Note : unlike most Browser News pages, this page is starkly plain, with minimal styling, partly to illustrate the points more clearly, but mainly to make it easier to compare browsers: viewing this page with several browsers and/or configurations at the same time makes the browsers’ basic differences clearer.

Fonts Listed

Samples are displayed of all the font weights possible for these fonts using CSS:

Font Weight Samples

This lists the fonts, their nine Possible Weights, and samples in both regular and italic faces. The number of weights truly available can be determined by examining the samples and counting how many distinct weights appear. The fonts include generic fonts, proposed generic fonts, local fonts, and embedded fonts, the embedded fonts being .

For many fonts there are only two distinct font weights, i.e. the regular and bold weights.

Note : as noted above, there is a much, much slower alternate page which, for most fonts, determines automatically and precisely which font weights exist. It takes so long to display that your browser may say that it isn’t responding, or may ask you whether you want to abort the JavaScript: you should have patience and let the alternate page’s Javascript finish.
